Probability and Odds

Probability is expressed in terms of a proportion (or percentage) of times an event will occur. A probability of .2 means that the event in question is expected to occur 20% of the time.

Odds in N

20% translates neatly into 1 time in 5. That's 1 occurance in 5 trials.

Odds to N

But usually we express odds in terms of how many times the event will occur compared to how many times it will fail to occur. With the 20% probability example that would be 1 to 4. For every 5 trials we expect 1 success and 4 failures.
